Jaisalmer is known as the desert city. It is located close to the Rajasthan border with Pakistan. The city was founded by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 after he chose to abandon the previous capital at Lodurva. The family is known as the Bhatti Rajputs. Many of the rulers of the Punjabi princely states claim to be associated with this family.

Due to its location Jaisalmer has not been touched by outside influences and was one of the last states to sign a treaty agreement with the British.
