Raja Man Singh founded this dynasty when the Kachawaha clan took control of Amer. Man Singh built the fort of Amer and he governed his kingdom from here until the capital was relocated to Jaipur.

Jaipur as it is today was founded in 1727 by the leader of the Kachhawaha clan, Sawai Jai Singh who is still remembered throughout the world for his passion of astonomy. Sawai Jai Singh came to the throne at the age of 11 in 1699. His capital was originally at Amer but he deceided to build a greater city and thus Jaipur was built. Jaipur is known as the Pink city and it was repainted in 1876 during the visit of the Prince of Wales.

Today the city is a have for tourists and the current Maharaja has turned many of the old places into hotels. This has enabled the Jaipur family to carry on living in style.

During the late 1970's, Indira Gandhi imposed emergency rule in India. She used this opportunity to imprison the Rajmata of Jaipur and the Maharaja on charges of holding a very small amount of foreign currency. After this the tax officials raided several homes and started to dig up floors in several of the forts cum palaces. They claimed that treasure worth millions had been buried by the Jaipur family. All that was found was approximately 5 million (GBP) worth of gold which had already been declared to the government.
